Victoria

Victoria now regulates plumbing through the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC), which absorbed the VBA's registration and enforcement functions from 1 July 2025. Plumbers register by class (water supply, sanitary, drainage, gasfitting, roofing, mechanical services) and can hold multiple classes on one registration. Compliance certificates are required for work valued over $750 (incl. GST) and must be lodged within five business days.

New South Wales

NSW Fair Trading regulates plumbing and drainage under the Home Building Act 1989 through a three-tier system: Tradesperson Certificate (journeyperson), Individual Contractor Licence, and Endorsed Contractor Licence. A Certificate of Compliance is required for all plumbing and drainage work, irrespective of project scale, and must be lodged with the relevant water utility or council.

Queensland

The QBCC licenses plumbing and drainage work under the Queensland Building and Construction Commission Act 1991. Gasfitting requires both a QBCC licence and a separate occupational licence from RSHQ. Queensland uses a Form 4/4A inspection system with council inspections at specified stages of the work.

Western Australia

WA plumbing licences are issued by the Plumbers Licensing Board, administered under Building and Energy, under the Water Services Licensing (Plumbers Licensing and Plumbing Standards) Regulations 2000. Gasfitters require a separate permit from Building and Energy with its own conditions.

South Australia

Consumer and Business Services (CBS) licenses plumbers and gasfitters under the Plumbers, Gas Fitters and Electricians Act 1995, with a combined pathway covering both trades.
